Timmins, Ontario — Monday, January 29, 2024
The Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) is teaming up with the Timmins Rock Junior A hockey team for a special event on Family Day. They will launch the “Heads Up!” campaign at their home game against the Hearst Lumberjacks on Monday, February 19, at 2:00 p.m., at the McIntyre Arena.
This game is dedicated to the memory of Ryan Seguin. Ryan was an advocate for brain health, having founded the Timmins Concussion Awareness Committee and the Side-by-Side Peer Support Program at the University of Ottawa. “As we join forces to increase concussion awareness at the game, we pay tribute to Ryan’s legacy in promoting mental health and concussion education,” said Ted Gooch, the President of the Timmins Rock.
“The PHU has partnered with the Timmins Rock because they are great role models for youth in sports,” said Alex Duhaime, Public Health Nurse from the PHU. The event will feature education and messaging about concussions. After the game, youth are welcome to meet the players who will be sharing their personal experiences with concussions.
Gooch adds, “In the past, hockey players were often told to skate it off after a hit. We want to change that mindset and encourage athletes to take all head injuries seriously.” He adds, “We are excited about this event where we will be sharing important information about concussion safety.”
Concussions are a common injury in sport that often go unnoticed. The PHU’s “Heads Up!” campaign will focus on how to recognize, prevent, and manage concussions. “Educating people about concussions is the best way to shift the culture in sport. Working with the Timmins Rock will help teach young athletes to think about concussions and speak up when they are hurt,” said Alex Duhaime, Public Health Nurse for the PHU. Duhaime adds, “Lowering the risk of concussions needs teamwork from coaches, parents, fans and players.”
