Teachable Moments
Children learn by listening, watching and touching things during every waking moment of the day. Every interaction is and can be meaningful. Caregivers can take time with each moment to teach children something about the world. They can use these small teachable moments to communicate healthy patterns for children to follow.
As caregivers we can make daily routines a fun and positive time to share and learn together. A shared interaction promotes connection and fosters a positive learning and caring environment.
For example:
*Get attention with excitement.
Hey Sarah, come with me. This will be fun.
*Say what your are going to do and share the task.
We are going to wash our hands.
*Talk about what is happening; Describe your actions.
We are going to wet our hands, use soap and then rinse. Now we dry our hands.
*Talk about why.
This cleans our hands and removes germs; it can help us and other not to get sick.
*Show what you want them to do.
Talk and teach at the same time.
*Let the child try the task by themselves.
Your turn.
*Use emotions and noises that are fun and exciting.
Splish, splash our hands are having a bath!!
